The depiction of the naughty schoolgirl has long been popular in the movies. In the United Kingdom, the earliest was St. Trinian’s. It started with the Belles of St. Trinian’s in 1954 with sequels following in 1957, 1960, 1966 and 1980. The movies were inspired by a series of cartoons by British cartoonist, Ronald Searle. St Trinian’s is a lawless school with out-of-control girls. The original movie starred the wonderful Alastair Sim in the dual role of the headmistress, Miss Fritton and her brother Clarence Fritton.
In 2007 a new version of St. Trinian’s (called St. Trinian’s School For Bad Girls in the U.S.) was released which borrowed certain elements from the first movie. It starred Rupert Everett was Miss Camilla Fritton, the Headmistress who also played Carnaby Fritton, Camilla’s brother. The members of British girl band, Girls Aloud, also made an appearance as members of the St. Trinian’s school band. A sequel, St. Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold was released in 2009.
